The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) identifies that the substance is ‘harmful if swallowed, harmful if inhaled and causes serious eye irritation’.
The fragrance chemical benzyl alcohol is classified as a frequent and well recognized allergen in CosIng; the European Commission database for information on cosmetic substances and ingredients.
How is it used?
Benzyl alcohol is used as a solvent (a substance that dissolves a solute) in for example shellacs, paints and inks. Apart from shellacs, benzyl alcohol is used when making cosmetic products⋆ such as soaps and perfumes.
We use the European Commissions definition of Cosmetics:
“Cosmetics range from everyday hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste to luxury beauty items including perfumes and makeup”.
