What is it?

What are the effects?

This substance belongs to the groups:

2-Phenylphenol is on the Red List* from Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a project of Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (previously the Breast Cancer Fund). They list the substance as a probable carcinogen and an endocrine disrupter.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) identifies that 2-Phenylphenol is “causes serious eye irritation, causes skin irritation, may cause respiratory irritation and is very toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.”

How is it used?

2-Phenylphenol is used as a cosmetic biocide (disinfectant in products), fragrance ingredient and preservative in cosmetic products*. The substance can for example be found in facial cleansers and facial moisturizers.

We use the European Commissions definition of Cosmetics:
“Cosmetics range from everyday hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste to luxury beauty items including perfumes and makeup”.
