What is it?

“1-Naphthol, or α-naphthol, is a fluorescent organic compound with the formula C10H7OH. It is a white solid. It is an isomer of 2-naphthol differing by the location of the hydroxyl group on the naphthalene ring.” Wikipedia

What are the effects?

This substance belongs to the groups:

1-Naphthol is restricted for use in cosmetics in the European Union and Canada.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) have registered that 1-Naphthol is “harmful if swallowed, is harmful in contact with skin, causes serious eye damage, causes skin irritation and may cause respiratory irritation.”

How is it used?

In cosmetics*, 1-Naphthol is used as a hair dye substance in oxidative hair color and bleaching products. The chemical can also be found in various pharmaceuticals and other dyes.

“Cosmetics range from everyday hygiene products such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, and toothpaste to luxury beauty items including perfumes and makeup”.
